A reliable insider has claimed a remaster of Fallout 3 is still in development, but it’s going to be a while before it arrives.
The long-rumoured remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion became a reality earlier this week through leaked screenshots, but it isn’t the only revamped Bethesda role-playing game supposedly in development.
Back in 2023, leaked documents from Microsoft outed several projects which were either planned or already in development. This included, amongst other titles, the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages, the Oblivion remaster, and a remaster of 2008’s Fallout 3.
With the Oblivion remaster rumoured to launch next week, the existence of a Fallout 3 remaster has become a topic of discussion once again – with one leaker suggesting it is real, but it won’t be released for some time.
The information comes from reliable leaker NateTheHate, who was recently proven to be accurate about the Switch 2 reveal and release date. In response to a fan on X, who asked whether the Fallout 3 remaster is still happening, he replied: ‘Planned but won’t be for a while.’
To another person on X who asked a similar question, the leaker replied: ‘It’ll be a while before we see it.’
NateTheHate gives no indication of how long ‘a while’ would be and didn’t confirm that it was in active development. It’s possible a remaster could be held back to coincide with the launch of Fallout season two on Amazon, which is expected to come out at some point in 2026.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently told Variety how he had ‘learned’ from the success of the Fallout series and having game tie-ins ready to coincide with adapations.
‘I was glad we had Fallout 76 and even Fallout Shelter grew when the Fallout television show came out,’ Spencer said.
‘We had the Fallout 4 remaster there, so there was something for the community that was loving the TV show to try something new in Fallout. But I wouldn’t say we perfected that, of being ready and having a date when we knew the show was going to come out, and really we learned from it, is the best way of putting it.’
In actual fact the Fallout 4 ‘remaster’ was simply a next gen patch and, as is the case for almost all new video game movies and TV shows, there were no new titles to launch alongside the Amazon show. It’s been almost a decade since the last numbered sequel and even live service title Fallout 76 is over seven years old now.
Beyond a potential remaster of Fallout 3, Bethesda is working on the next mainline instalment, Fallout 5, although it isn’t set to come out until after The Elder Scrolls 6, which itself isn’t expected until around 2027 or 2028.
With Fallout 5 still many years away, a remaster of Fallout 3 seems like a no brainer for the interim, even if many people would probably prefer a revamped version of 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas.
The remaster of Oblivion still hasn’t officially been announced, but various insiders have claimed it will shadow drop at some point next week.
